The Saltaire Studio

In January 2021 lockdown was creating havoc with my schedule and I would find that I wouldn’t leave the house for 3-4 days and be constantly glued to my computer screen. I decided I needed another project which would give me some structure and this coincided with the start of the 100 day project which was running on Instagram.

I have had lots going on in October with running workshops, getting work ready for exhibitions and attending courses that Art& kind of crept up on me this year. Thankfully I had been organised enough to get all the paintings off to the framers well in advance - although that in itself confused matters as I'd forgotten which paintings were with them.

I have absolutely loved being back in the studio painting and this time I have been experimenting with scale and surface. For the last 3 years I have been mainly painting with cold wax on a smaller scale and on paper. I love working on the paper but you can only scale up so far with work that has to be behind glass, unless of course you fix the paper to the board and well I know that will just go terribly wrong for me.

So I am working on a new collection of work as I have a very busy schedule ahead of me this year and this painting just came out of my head the other day and I am really in love with it. The palette is very different to what I've used before but I think this image has come about from a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to see the Norman Ackroyd prints.

It was my first time applying for the Art& event and I was really pleased to have been selected for their York show in October 2018. It was quite a different type of art fair to ones I had done previously as you were provided with a blank shell unit which you then had to curate yourself.
