It was my first time applying for the Art& event and I was really pleased to have been selected for their York show in October 2018. It was quite a different type of art fair to ones I had done previously as you were provided with a blank shell unit which you then had to curate yourself.
A different challenge to Art in the Pen and Saltaire Arts Trail but all were equally challenging and unique in how I had to tackle my display.
The biggest challenge with Art& was the size of the space so I set about making my plans as I usually do by sketching them out on paper.
and then laying them out on the floor with the paintings I was thinking of displaying. This serves two purposes: to ensure that I am utilising the space efficiently; and to ensure the paintings work well with each other.
I had to think quite creatively for this show as I had lots of small paintings which needed to hang well together and it wasn't going to be an effort taking them down as and when they sold.
Good old Ikea floating shelves came to the rescue for this challenge.
When it came to actually setting up the planning made all the difference and I was quickly up and running within a couple of hours.
As an art fair itself I was really impressed with the organisation and marketing of the event. They even provided artists with wrist bands!
The 2019 Art& York will be held from Friday 25th, Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th October 2019. Artist submissions are being accepted now for anyone interested in applying.
