Well it was this time last year when I first approach April at the Craft House in Saltaire about possibly running some workshops with her. I'd had a number of people come up to me at art fairs asking about oil and cold wax and wanting to find out more about this medium and the techniques I used.
Neither of us had any idea whether people would be that interested as it seemed a bit specialist to me for anyone to want to do. We started off with a couple of dates in the diary and launching the workshops as a one day introduction.
The first workshop was sold out before it was published on the Craft House website and the second followed shortly. Not only did we have experienced artists wanting to sign up but also people who had never really painted before. We also had people willing to travel to Saltaire from other parts of the country!
So out came the diaries and we booked some more dates for later this year, extending the workshop to 2 days so that I could cover a range of techniques. They soon booked up and we were already starting to look at dates for 2019.
It's now October 2018 and we've now launched dates up to end of 2019 and have introduced different levels of workshops, beginners and intermediate so there is a workshop a month now offered.
So what is cold wax?
Cold wax is used at room temperature, without heat, and when combined with oil paints it can be used to produce depth and atmosphere to both abstract and landscape work.
The workshops are based at the Craft House in the world Heritage Village, Saltaire. Dates and availability listed below.
Beginners oil and cold wax workshop
These are two day workshops which are suitable for beginners. Although not essential, some painting experience, in any medium, would be recommended.
In this experimental course you will be guided step by step on the methods of building up paintings in layers, using the cold wax, oil paints and pure pigments. The workshops will also look at mark making and will explore different ways to create textures and lines using a variety of tools and techniques.
Cost: £110 per person - includes all material and equipment.

Intermediate oil and cold wax workshop
We will be experimenting with techniques for building up paintings in layers, using cold wax, oil colours, pigment sticks and pure pigments. Using a wide variety of tools, collage and mixed media we will look at new ways to create textures. You will be encouraged to use your favourite colours and marks to create stunning and atmospheric pieces.
Working with oil and cold wax involves a lot of experimentation and a willingness to set out without knowing where you are going to end up. You’ll learn more about your creative process and you will leave eager to experiment more with this medium.
The workshop will include information about techniques, as well as demonstrations and plenty of time for practice.
