I have many years’ experience working in oils and have spent the past several years guiding artists in incorporating cold wax into their practice.

Cold wax is an extraordinarily versatile medium, offering new ways to explore surface, layering, and mark-making beyond traditional oil techniques. For me, it has been transformative — allowing the embedding of materials such as marble dust and gold leaf, the use of solvent to dissolve and disrupt paint, and the confidence to push bold shifts in colour and tone. Through this process, the boundary between abstraction and representation in my work has become increasingly fluid.

One of the most rewarding aspects of cold wax is the freedom it brings to oil painting. It loosens the medium’s more rigid conventions and encourages a more spontaneous, playful approach — one that invites experimentation, innovation, and discovery.
