This piece was created recently whilst I was out in Ireland. It started off as a bit of a disaster as the place where I was staying had this gorgeous view out to sea but by mid afternoon the sun would be shining in so much that it was blinding me and making my cold wax go all a bit weird.
So I put it to one side for a couple of days and when I came back to it started with a completely different palette and covered the whole thing over and started again. It was quite an interesting development this one as I have got into using my brayer for creating really thin veils of colours but then using it for blending also. What it's doing is creating really muted greys and blues which I absolutely adore.
The Heron Island painting is where I started to use the brayer in this way and I have since created a few more paintings in a similar vein but they were more based on trees and land. With the Crossing as soon as I started working into making marks it started to resemble more and more like docklands. The marks I had made were more architectural and so I built on that further. It soon became apparent that it was the sail into Dublin that had inspired this painting.
Framed and glazed this painting is 64 x 48 cm and will be on show at the Saltaire Arts Trail in May.
